Lucena City Mayors from 1896 to Present

Fellow Lucenahins! For us to know further about our roots and our history, we’ve researched and gathered some information regarding the public servants (municipal presidents and mayors) that once served Lucena ever since its founding up to present.

 

Under the Spanish occupation, these are the ones who served as the Head of the Municipality:

Jorge Zaballero 1896
*capitan municipal
Don Crisanto Marquez August 1898
*first municipal president of Lucena

 

During the American Civil Government, the following served as Municipal Presidents of Lucena:

Gabriel Cord 1902-1903
Gregorio Marquez 1903-1904
Juan Carmona 1904-1906
Venancio Queblar 1906-1910
Feliciano Zoleta 1910-1912
Fortunato Alvarez 1912-1916
Pedro Nieva 1916-1919
1919-1922
Jose Nava 1922-1925
Venancio Queblar 1925-1928
Domingo Gamboa 1928-1931
Fernando Barcelona 1931-1934

 

The Mayors under the Commonwealth Government in Lucena are:

Melecio Custodio 1934-1937
Anselmo Nadres, Jr 1937-1938
Pedro Torres 1938-1940

 

Under the Japanese occupation, these are the ones who served as Mayors of Lucena:

Federico V. Marquez 1940-1943
Dr. Jose Mendoza 1943-1944
*was later executed by the Japanese because of his guerrilla connections
Atty. Teotimo Atienza 1944-1945
*was appointed mayor in replacement of Dr. Jose Mendoza

 

After the liberation from the Japanese government on April 1945, the following served as Acting Mayors of Lucena:

Julian Zoleta April 1945
*was designated as acting mayor of Lucena
Federico Marquez May 1945
*the Philippine Civil Affairs Unit (PCAU) turned over the government of Lucena to Federico Marquez
Honorio Abadilla October 1946
*was chosen as mayor when Mayor Federico Marquez resigned from his position

Barbara “Ruby” C. Talaga 2010 – October 2012*
*COMELEC annulled the election and proclamation
of Barbara Ruby Talaga and the Supreme Court issued
from discharging the functions of a City Mayor.
SC also ordered the proclaimed Vice-Mayor to succeed
as Mayor because of the permanent vacancy of the Mayor’s Office.1

All in all, Lucena has been under the administration of 30 Mayors including the appointed OIC’s, Municipal Presidents and Capitan Municipal.
